Math - Problem Solving Strategies & Math POW (due Fri., Feb. 22nd.)

Are You Money Savvy?
Save an extra __________________ this year!

Here is an easy way to bank extra savings.  Add $1 to your savings account this week.  Next week, add $2, and continue to increase the amount by a dollar over the next 52 weeks.  The most you will ever put in is $52, but you'll gain more than _______________ by doing it.

1.  What is the total amount of money (without interest) that you will save over 52 weeks?
2.  What is the fastest way to figure out the problem and what might be the slowest way to figure out the problem?
3.  If you changed the savings amount to pennies how much money would you save?  What about dimes?  What about toonies?
Show me the math!(Hand in your answer.)

I am going to try this - anyone else?  Would you purchase anything special with the money saved or would you keep on saving? (Post your answer.)

  1. I am considering doing this. I think I would keep on saving my money until something neat catches my eye.

  3. I would keep on saving my money and put most of it aside, then if I see something that I like I would buy it but come on I am a kid how much stuff do I need!

  8. I do not think I would save this way. But if I did I would probably buy a new pair of headphones or something.

  9. I think I would save this way because usually I go and spend all my money before I get enough to buy something good. Saving this way will let me have most of my money with me while the rest is sitting in a bank then if I go and spend all the money I have with me after 52 or more weeks I can just take the money in the bank and use the for shopping at the mall with my BFF or whatever I'm doing. I'm not sure what i'd buy probably an itunes gift card, case and new headphone and if I still have a bit of money left over I would buy the shirt that says I 'heart' and then a picture of a mustache and some mustache earrings to match. Yes... I do love mustaches
