Is zero a positive integer?

http://themathleague.com/index.php/component/content/article?id=82
Open the above link and read about zero.  Research at least 3 other reputable sites and see if there are various opinions about whether or not zero is a positive integer.  What answer came up most often?  What do you think?  Post your response.

  1. The answer: "Zero is not a positive number, nor a negative number. It is in the middle of the number line. Numbers greater than 0 are considered positive, and number less than 0 are considered negative." showed up most often. I think that that is really smart, because 0 isn't really positive, but it isn't negitave either. When we refer to number, sometimes we say "This number is positive, because it's bigger than 0." or " This number isn't positive, it's negitave, because it's below 0 on the number line." I think that zero isn't positive, or negitave, it's just zero.

    That is all.

  2. What showed up most often was that zero is a integer, just not a positive one. The definition of a positive number is that it is greater than zero and a negative number is less than zero. Zero can`t be greater or less than zero because it is zero! Zero is a non-negative integer: a number that is not negative.

  3. I do not really know either if 0 is a positive integer,or if it is a negative integer.Because when you count up,you start with 1.When you count down, you start with -1.Honestly,I think that 0 is neither positive or negative. But that is my opinion! If I had to pick one, then I would say that 0 is a negative integer.

  4. Based on my research, I think that 0 is neither a positive integer, or a negative integer, because a positive integer is anything greater than zero, and a negative integer is anything lower than zero. So therefore, zero is not a negative nor positive integer.

  5. On wiki it says that an integer is positive if it is greater then 0, and an integer is negative if it is less then 0. Zero is defined as neither negative or positive.

On "The math league" it says that positive integers are all the whole numbers greater than zero: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... . Negative integers are all the opposites of these whole numbers: -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, …. We do not consider zero to be a positive or negative number.

On "Math.com" it says that an integer is a whole number that can be either greater than 0, called positive, or less than 0, called negative. Zero is neither positive nor negative.

  6. According to Wikipedia, Google Search, and Math Forum: Ask Doctor Math, zero is neither a positive or negative integer. A positive integer is a number that is greater than zero, a negative is one that is less than zero, and zero is just zero. I agree with all these websites.

There isn't really that much else to say. I looked at Math is Fun, and I think that they agree, but I found that the website was not really clear on this topic, so I did not use them as a reference.

  8. From all the research I did my answer is that zero is neither a positive integer nor a negative integer. Wiki says that a positive integer is classified as a positive integer if it is more then zero and negative are classified as negative if they are below zero, proving that zero is not a negative or positive.
Math forum says the exact same thing but in different words; after zero is negatives and before are positives, leaving zero to just be zero.
Mathifun says the same thing AGAIN but in different text; Whole numbers after zero are positive, and ones after are negative!

But besides that I have a theory...

Zero is the LAST number, yes last. all the numbers go in a loop (the first on being 1 then wrapping all the way back to zero). Not many people think of this because they think numbers are infinite... but what if they are not?! This is a theory I made up and it could be true... I don't have to much evidence other than why not? No one knows the numbers in between there though, so we may never find out...

BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY A MATH THEORY
Sorry I had to make a Matpat reference :)

  9. If you are counting forward, you start at 1 and continue. 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and so on. When you are counting backwards you start at -1 and continue. -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, and so on. Therefore according to the site http://themathleague.com/index.php/component/content/article?id=82 zero is neither positive or negative

According to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0_(number), zero is a place holder, so it is not negative or positive.

According to http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/26705/is-zero-positive-or-negative zero is not positive nor negative.

Based on my research zero is neither positive or negative, it’s just a placeholder. -Lucas

  10. WIKI says that a number is positive if it is greater than zero and negative if it is below zero.It says zero is neither negetive or positive.
Mathforum.org also says that zero is neither negative or positive.
So on every single site it says that zero is neither negative or positive.

  11. I don’t think 0 is a positive number or a negative number, sort of like how 1, isn’t a prime number or a composite number. For every positive number there is a negative number like, 1 has -1, and 2 has -2, or even 8647 has a -8647. There is a 0, but there isn’t such thing as a -0. Also in the number line, 0 is the middle, anything higher than 0 is positive and anything lower than 0 is negative so my answer may seem like everyone else’s but it’s true, 0 is neither positive nor negative.

  12. The Math League
It states that any number above 0 is positive and any number below 0 is negative. The number zero is not said to be either on this site.

    Math Forum
The Math Forum says that 0 is neither positive nor negative.
"Negative numbers are numbers that are smaller than zero, and positive numbers are numbers that are bigger than zero. Since
zero isn't bigger or smaller than itself (just like you're not older than yourself, or taller than yourself), zero is neither positive nor negative.”

    Math.com
As said before, this website also states that zero is neither. Positives are above, a negatives are below, zero is the middle.
“An integer is a whole number that can be either greater than 0, called positive, or less than 0, called negative. Zero is neither positive nor negative. Two integers that are the same distance from the origin in opposite directions are called opposites.”

    Math Four
Yep. Same thing. This website actually explains that numbers are divided into 3 categories; Positive, negative, and zero.
“We think of the numbers as either positive or negative. But actually, all real numbers can be divided into three categories: positive, negative and zero.
This is one of the reasons zero can be forgotten in all this mix. With so many other numbers to be positive and negative, zero’s truly in a class by himself.”

    My opinion
I agree with all the sites. I think that zero is neither positive or negative, because positives all have an amount to it, and negatives are less than zero, and zero is just nothing. Literally. This is all I gotta say about it.

  13. I think Zero is neither a negative or positive number, because if you subtract or add Zero from 3 for example, the answer would still be three. Another thing is if you put a number line like -3_-2_-1_0_1_2_3, Zero would be in the middle.

What Math forum thought, was that zero was neither negative or positive. What most people on urch said, was that 0 was neither negative or positive too, and people thought it was an even number along with saying it was neither positive or negative. Math four also thought zero was neither positive or negative.

  15. I don’t think that zero is a positive integer, or a negative integer. I think this because, like some other people said, a number less than zero, is negative, and an number greater than zero, is positive… So what does that make zero? I think that’s why it’s neither a positive integer, or a negative integer.

But Wait! I’m not done yet! No that paragraph up there was just what I think!
The paragraph below is what I have researched!

The website on the blog said something like this:
For every positive integer, there is a negative integer. They are called opposites. Like 98, is a positive integer, and it has a negative integer; - 98. But zero, is neither. There can’t be two zero’s, 0 and -0. That does not make sense! Zero is like the divider between positive integers, and negative integers. Therefore, zero is neither a positive or negative integer or number.
