Math POW # 2 - Problem of the Week
Problem B (level)
Canadian Hero
Due Thurs., Sept. 26th
Carefully read the question below. Highlight the key information. Answer each question and show the operations you used to figure out your answers. For example - 5 374km/ 42 km = _______km
Remember to include the question in your written answer. For example - a) It would take Terry _____ days, at the rate of 42 km each day, to cover the total distance (5 374km) he ran.
In 1980, Terry Fox ran about 3 339 miles (5 374 km) across Canada during his
Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research.
a) Each day he tried to run a marathon, which is 42 km. At this rate, how
many days would it take to cover the total distance he ran?
b) His run ended in Thunder Bay, Ontario after 143 days. Was he able to run a
marathon a day, as he had hoped?
c) By 2012, 500 million dollars had been raised in Terry's name. How many
dollars is that for each km that he ran?
d) Count the number of strides it takes you to run 10 m. Using this
information, determine how many steps it would take you to run the same
total distance as Terry ran.
[Remember that he did the whole run with an artifcial leg!]
that's cool!
